Wi-Fi vs Bluetooth
Most smart bulbs connect by Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Wi-Fi bulbs can be controlled from anywhere via the internet and work with voice assistants easily — great for full smart-home use. Bluetooth bulbs are simpler and don't load your Wi-Fi, but only work within range. For most homes, Wi-Fi is the more flexible choice.
Check the base type
A smart bulb has to fit your holder. In India, common bases are B22 (bayonet) and E27 (screw). Check what your fixtures use before buying — the wrong base simply won't fit.
Brightness and colour
- Tunable white: adjust from warm to cool white for different moods and tasks.
- RGB / colour: millions of colours for accent and fun lighting.
- Brightness (lumens): match the room — brighter for kitchens, softer for bedrooms.
Voice assistant compatibility
If you use (or plan to use) Alexa or Google Assistant, check the bulb supports it. Voice control — "turn off the bedroom light" — is one of the most-loved smart features.
App and ecosystem
Look for a well-reviewed app that's easy to use, with features like scheduling, scenes and grouping. Sticking to one brand/ecosystem keeps all your bulbs in a single app.
Start small
Try one or two bulbs in the rooms you'll benefit from most before kitting out the whole house. It's the easiest way to learn what features you actually use.
