Step 1: Fit the bulb
Switch off the fixture, screw or insert the smart bulb into the correct holder (B22 or E27), then switch the power back on. Leave the wall switch on — smart bulbs need constant power to stay connected.
Step 2: Download the app
Install the bulb's companion app (named on the box or listing) and create an account. This app is where you'll control everything, so pick a bulb with a well-reviewed app.
Step 3: Connect to Wi-Fi
Follow the app's "add device" steps. The bulb usually blinks to show it's in pairing mode; if not, switching it off and on a few times often triggers it. Most smart bulbs connect to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, so make sure your phone is on that band during setup.
Step 4: Name and group
Give each bulb a clear name ("Bedroom", "Kitchen") and group bulbs by room. Good naming makes both app and voice control much easier.
Step 5: Link a voice assistant (optional)
In the Alexa or Google Home app, link the bulb's brand/skill, and you'll be able to control lights by voice. Use the same names so commands are intuitive.
Step 6: Set scenes and schedules
Create scenes (relax, bright, night) and schedules (on at sunset, off at bedtime) so your lights work automatically around your routine.
Keep the switch on
The one rule to remember: if someone flips the wall switch off, the bulb loses power and goes offline. Smart switches or a gentle "leave it on" habit solves this.
